Starting with a mash bill that includes corn, rye, and malted barley, the Bowman Brothers distillery distills their wash three times through a copper still before setting it to age for “many years” (at least two, and we estimate most of it was aged for about 4 years) in their Virginia rickhouses. This is made in small batches of about 8 barrels at a time in honor of the brothers of the Abram Smith Bowman, who founded the original distillery in 1935. Though it is now owned by Sazerac, this expression maintains the unique characteristics of a smaller distillery’s processes, creating a spirit that is floral with notes of cinnamon and oak on the nose, vanilla, nuts and jalapeño on the palate, and a round finish with hints of spicy red pepper. An unusual and tasty bottle.
