Dale DeGroff Single Barrel Ragtime Rye Selection
Selected by none other than Dale DeGroff (@kingcocktl) - King Cocktail, mentor to thousands, and author of THE NEW CRAFT OF THE COCKTAIL - the barrel has been bottled as an 8 Year Old Rye Whiskey – the oldest Rye whiskey we have ever released. While the angels enjoy their share, only 78 bottles remain at cask strength for we mere mortals to contemplate and enjoy. Each bottle has been enumerated and personally signed by Dale, including his signature cocktail glass motif. A portion of the proceeds from each bottle will go to Heritage Radio Network (www.heritageradionetwork.org) in support of programs like The Speakeasy and so many others.
Aroma The high alcohol and characteristic rye spice leads the way. After the nose recovers from the combination of high alcohol the lead spice is white pepper for me and the baking spice notes and fruit notes take over. There is an unusual combination of green apple and baked Caramel apple at the same time! The American oak aromas of dill, coconut and sawdust are very apparent and also right out front. There is a citrus note in the nose that needs separating out from the alcohol that I didn’t recognize until I tasted.
Taste The alcohol is absolutely front and center again on the tongue, especially if you are a morning taster like I am. But that initial burn is expected and it is well integrated and short lived in this rye. The lead spice is the pepper but like in the nose the baking spices caramel and vanilla are mixed with fruit in this case baked caramel apple as in the nose and sour cherry. The acidity of the spirit is citric and specifically a hint of tangerine rind. The spirit is complex and very satisfying; rye grain whiskies really blossom with 8 to 12 years in oak and this one is no exception, it is right in the sweet spot of fruit spice and wood.
